This Strange Engine - Hope for the Future

'limbic brain'
The limbic brain is associated with memory, specifically, the ability to recall a particular memory upon receiving particular stimulus. An example might be a certain album recalling a particular computer game, because you would always play it whilst listening to that album.

The three major parts of the brain are as follows:

1 - The archipallium or primitive (reptilian) brain, comprising the structures of the brain stem - medulla, pons, cerebellum, mesencephalon, the oldest basal nuclei - the globus pallidus and the olfactory bulbs. It corresponds to the reptilian brain, and is responsible for base instincts - fight or flight, reproduction, feeding etc.

2 - The paleopallium or intermediate (old mammalian) brain, comprising the structures of the limbic system. It corresponds to the brain of the inferior mammals.

3 - The neopallium, also known as the superior or rational (new mammalian) brain, comprises almost the whole of the hemispheres (made up of a more recent type of cortex, called neocortex) and some subcortical neuronal groups. It corresponds to the brain of the superior mammals, thus including the primates and, consequently, the human species. This part of the brain is responsible for intellectual processing.

'library of an astronaut... body of thought'
This would appear to be a reference to the work of the German author Erich von Däniken. On his homepage, I found the following quote: "For over 30 years, Erich von Däniken has pursued the theory which postulates that Earth might have been visited by extraterrestrials in the remote past. In the United States Erich von Däniken won instant fame as a result of the television special 'In Search of Ancient Astronauts', based upon his first book Chariots of the Gods.

"Von Däniken believes that the pyramids in Egypt and the Mayan ones in South America, are artefacts constructed by ancient astronauts who visited the Earth many thousands of years ago, and that they were repositories of knowledge."
